CDC Issues Warning About Deadly Multistate Listeria Outbreak

28 People Hospitalized in 12 States

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a warning Friday about a deadly multistate listeria outbreak connected to deli meat. Since May, 28 people across 12 states have been hospitalized with an infection of the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes, the CDC said. Six people have died, and one pregnant woman lost her baby. The outbreak is the deadliest linked to deli meat in more than a decade.

Symptoms of Listeria Infection

Listeriosis is a serious infection that can cause fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. In pregnant women, listeria infection can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, or premature birth. In people with weakened immune systems, listeria infection can be fatal.

The CDC is urging consumers to avoid eating deli meat that has not been heated to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit. Deli meat can be safely reheated in the microwave or on the stovetop.

The CDC is also investigating the source of the outbreak. Investigators are looking for a common supplier or distributor of deli meat that may have been contaminated with Listeria.

The outbreak is a reminder that foodborne illnesses can be serious and even deadly. It is important to follow food safety guidelines to reduce your risk of getting sick.
