The History of the Alabama State Flag

A Symbol of the State's Past and Present

The current flag of Alabama, the second in the state's history, was adopted by Act 383 of the Alabama Legislature on February 16, 1895. The flag consists of a white field with a red saltire (diagonal cross). During the Civil War (1861-1865), an unofficial flag of blue with a yellow or white star was used.

The Crimson Cross

The official description of the Alabama state flag is as follows: "The flag of the State of Alabama shall be a crimson cross of St. Andrew on a field of white. The bars forming the cross shall be not less than six inches broad and shall extend diagonally across the flag from side to side."

Inspiration from the Confederate Battle Flag

The crimson cross on the Alabama state flag is inspired by the Confederate battle flag. This flag was used by the Confederate States of America during the Civil War. The cross on the Confederate battle flag represents the blood of the Confederate soldiers who died in the war.

A Symbol of State Pride

The Alabama state flag is a symbol of state pride. It is flown at government buildings, schools, and businesses throughout the state. The flag is also a popular souvenir for tourists.
